Wakeboarding in Madrid: It’s all about the lakes

It’s a city dominated by congested streets and nocturnal nightclubs, so wakeboarding in Madrid might be the last thing on your mind when planning your visit.

And although the capital city is more known for its museums than its motorboats, there exist unlikely options to quench your wakeboarding desires.

From natural lakes and manmade reservoirs on the outskirts of town, to notable camps and schools in close proximity to the city, wakeboarders will be astonished at what’s available for them in this sprawling metropolis.

Several lakes are formed from the damming of rivers in every direction out of town. The ones that allow motorboats are, of course, optimal for wakeboarding.

In San Martin De Valdeiglesias, just 30 kilometres west of downtown Madrid, lays the home of an extremely reputable wakeboarding school. Lessons are intent on making you a better wakeboarder and are not intended for beginners. The emphasis here is on landing airs and perfecting style.

Not an expert? No worries. There are other businesses which specialize in teaching novices the fundamentals in Valdemorillo. With advanced reservations you and your friends will be picked up at your hotel and whisked away for an afternoon of sunny adventure.

The camp prides itself on the preparation of new wakeboarders by training them on a trampoline off the lake. When everyone is educated you will hit the water and enjoy guaranteed time behind the boat. Afterwards, enjoy a cool drink at the lakeside bar before being ferried back to your cheap hotel in Madrid.

Other day packages include wakeboarding by cable just outside of the city. This unique version of the sport does not tow the rider behind a boat, but instead pulls them using a cable line elevated above the water.

While there is no wake to jump, there are obstacles to navigate and ramps for launching yourself. Of course you needn’t engage any of these if you don’t feel ready.

Cable wakingboard is an environmentally and economically friendly approach to the sport and perfect for a group of amateurs simply looking for a good time.

To take advantage of all of Madrid’s wakeboarding opportunities, you first need to book accommodation reservations in the city. While there are plenty of lavish hotels in town, staying here for cheap is easy to do. Websites like HostelBookers.com make finding the best rooms at the best rates easy around the world. The less money you spend on lodging the more you’ll have for exploring the bountiful wakeboarding options.
